stairway

The downstairs was specifically planned around a huge ballroom which the family often used to entertain their friends in style. The homestead was originally called 'Doune' after the famous Doune Castle in Scotland.

Certainly the architecture of the entrance of The Devereux is very bold, imposing and 'castle like'. The burns sold in the late 30's and the homestead became a private hotel offering fine meals, a lounge and upstairs accommodation.

dine

All these larger dances were programme affairs, the hostesses going the rounds to introduce people and see that the girls had enough partners. Large dances might provide claret cup but there would be very little claret in it! On winter evenings some hostesses provided hot soup at the finish, to warm the guests on their journeys home.

The younger folk came to dance, not to drink or smoke - in fact, any boy suspected of drinking was regarded with distaste! Good manners were considered important in the early years of this century and boys always wrote a note of thanks after a dance or called on the next Sunday afternoon, to be regaled with tea and cakes
